I am from the suburbs of Derna. The cause of the disaster is the huge amount of water coming from the valleys in the Green Mountain extending to the first dam in Derna carrying a large amount of giant rocks and tree trunks and huge valleys that swept away everything towards the first dam. The first dam was subjected to a direct strike, then the water retreated back a distance of 500 meters, then returned to the dam with a second strike, with huge rocks being pulled from the mountains, which led to the destruction of the first dam. There is also a reason that the doors of the first dam were closed to relieve pressure, with a warning to open the doors, but no It is opened before the disaster. I have relatives who live near the first dam. Their farms and homes were completely swept away. Even the soil was swept away. Only rocks were left in the desert. Near 13K people were presumably swept to their death by 2 broken water dams. It's a distressful news for humans to face such tragedy. Libya is a desert country, now witbout its water reserves, the future is unclear. My sympathies and heart fell to the country and the Libyan people.

When I looked on Google maps,the river bed and reservoirs were dry with vegetation growing and buildings and such. Is there a dry season when there is no water? Seems very odd to me. No question the dams burst and unleashed their torrent.
