That is not a crime. He can look at a firearm in a gun store.
He would not have passed a NICS instant background check the the charges pending, however. If the store sold him a firearm, the ATF is going to look poorly on that.
You do not want the ATF to look poorly on anything you do with your Federal Firearms License.
