‘We have a responsibility to measure our words’: Schneider on voting in favor of censuring Tlaib

Congress censuring Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) over her rhetoric about the war between Israel and Hamas is discussed by Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL), who voted in favor of censuring Tlaib. “I think the important thing to recognize is that as elected officials we all have a responsibility to express our feelings, express our views… We also have a responsibility to measure our words…,” Schneider tells Joy Reid.

    These are the 22 democrats that decided to censure their colleague, Rashida Tlaib. If your Representative is listed, I’d definitely recommend calling them and asking them why they decided to vote to publicly punish the only Palestinian American that has ever been elected into congress. They know that they had various internal measures, including circulating letters that were already being signed to express disapproval and disagreement that they could have signed on to if they actually wanted to express their disapproval of her comments on. This was pretty gross in my opinion.

    Even if your representative isn’t listed on here, I would recommend that you all call them or email them and ask them to call for a ceasefire. Over 10,000 civilians in Gaza have now died, and over half of them have been children.

    Rep. Jim Costa (Calif.)
    Rep. Angie Craig (Minn.)

    This congressman is completely wrong about the hospital attack. It has been shown in three different investigations that the blast could only come from a projectile from Israel. Now it's a moot point since the Israeli military has been bombing around all the hospitals in Gaza for a week.

    I'm on the fence with this. But it is insane for intelligent and reasonable people (particularly when considering the gap of reasonability between the parties) to be comparing their behavior to the behavior of the GOP. If you're holding up the GOP rhetoric and asking why we're not censuring them, that's madness. There has been attempts to censure members of the GOP. They won't even hold their bannerman accountable for attempting a coup, and you think they're going to care about censuring their own?!

    What passes for behavior among the Democrats will automatically and certainly unfairly be at a higher standard than the GOP. And thus, it will always seem disproportionate when Democrats hold their own to account where the GOP won't.

    I don't have as fragile of sensibilities, and I'm really not familiar with the "river to the sea" phrase, so it's hard for me to have a clear leaning on this. That being said, Tlaib and the Squad in general are more progressive which puts them in a minority position among the Dems, and that will change how they attempt to govern among their peers. Nonetheless, they have been outspoken in their rhetoric, they have been divisive in a business that requires you to build coalitions to accomplish things, and have allowed their perspective to be siloed on more than a few issues. At a time when the Democrats are in the minority in the House when so much needs to get done, when faced with attempting to shut a dangerous MAGA faction down, the left needs all hands on deck, and I don't see the value of being divisive on this issue, nor do I see the value in pushing for censure of their own. In normal times, I might be more inclined to criticize the moderate Democrats for their fragile sensibilities, and to ask how the Dems are actually going to seek dividing civilian Palestinian safety from Hamas' terrorism. Like I said, I'm on the fence.

    I actually really appreciated this segment, because I've seen so much from left-leaning media criticizing the Dems for the vote, but no open dialogue allowing them to explain their position. I want to give Reid credit for airing this.

    But finally, I am dismayed that so many on the left are so outraged by the left, that they're using this to criticize their own, or call for Biden to drop out of the presidential race. And I understand and sympathize with the complexities of what's going on in Israel, condemning the attacks from Hamas, the living situation imposed by Israel, and the desperation and ownership of the Palestinian people, as well as and most sadly the victims of violence and hatred on both sides. That being said, unfortunately, we have our own crisis in America, which requires all reasonable Americans to be very acutely focused: we cannot allow MAGA to regain power. Palestinian rights will most assuredly not advance if Netanyahu gets Trump as his international peer. No aid to start working toward that peace will come from a MAGA-controlled House/Senate. Please see the strategy, please understand the bigger picture. Trump and MAGA already set the US back in a myriad of ways at home just in his first-term practice run. If you care about affecting better outcomes in Israel, make your voice heard and speak your intention, but prioritize coming together. Division among the left led to Trump's first term, please don't make the same mistake in 2024.

    Can the US public please become more responsible in not putting Republicans into office? I beg you! The world will be so much better off! Best from Europe

    @Phi1618033

    As an Israeli-American, I respect Tlaibs right to speak and I don't believe she should've been censured. On the other hand, we are not stupid. We know what "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" means. It means free of Jews. We know that the Palestinian Arabs see the Jewish State of Israel as illegitimate, and, therefore, must be wiped off the map and replaced with one Arab State of Palestine. We know this is how you really feel. Stop trying to gaslight us!

    @elisamartinelli7676

    I can't believe I'm saying this but, i actually agree with the republican party on this, the rules apply to both sides. I understand this is an emotional time but she should have restrained from using that phrase"the river to the sea" it doesn't help this situation.

  7. 20
    @oren1neu1dag

    Before anybody tries to make the phrase "from the river to the sea" to something that it clearly isn't, remember this:

    In 1994 when the Palestinian National Authority was created under the Oslo Accords; Yasser Arafat clearly stated that Jews that renounce their Israeli citizenship are still ineligible for Palestinian citizenship, they can only go back to Europe.

    So Yeah, the Facts speak for themselves, and calling for Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing from the Palestinian side is just as bad as the ones that call for it from the Israeli side!

  8. 21
    @Tarboosh

    The phrase has one very specific meaning and one meaning only. Bravo on the censure. She should really head on over to Londonistan and join the pro terrorist press. MSNBC is a biased joke. Reid should be fired post haste for quoting Hamas death figures. We know that includes thousands of orcs and we have proof of staged victims by Hamas and the Palestinians. She is aiding and abetting the enemy.

    @mikefobear589

    Hamas was founded in 1987 Palestinian civilians have been jailed, tortured and murdered by Hamas from its beginning. Netanyahu knows this. Bombing civilians has nothing to do with making Hamas accountable..

  10. 23
    @Kurt-ci1dk

    I support Rep Talib's domestic politics and she seems very sympathetic and thoughtful. Using "from the river to the Sea" However is very ugly and sends support to Hamas, intentional or not.

    @marmac7619

    "Its not a Question of WHO … but its the words." WTH? That's no answer, but a total copout. It was the who, or why didn't they try harder to censure all those Repub statements about Gaza & Palestinians?!

  12. 28
    @ronaldking1054

    How does someone arguing against the policy of the Palestinian state going away being anti-Israel or antisemitic? Now, if they wanted to censure on the misinformation on the hospital, that makes sense. The current administration of Israel argued that the Palestinian state should go away. They get to deal with the disastrous ramifications of their insanity. Should we try to get back to the old status quo? Yes, because it is better for Palestinians and Israelis than the current state of affairs. Is that perfect? No, but sometimes imperfect is all we will get.

  13. 29
    @marmac7619

    I'm guessing that Rep. Tlaib didn't take that Post down about suggesting that Israel bombed that Hospital, is because that is her true belief? So then, i suppose it would also be censurable had she, or anybody else, further suggested that what BEBE claimed about the Hamas attack, re: the # of dead .. the # of hostages .. or the degree of carnage – was also misrepresented in one or more of those pronouncements?!

  14. 30
    @zarahcastro3601

    The meaning of the river to the sea is what you want to believe it to fit what you believe like what the meaning of the word woke has become… Again this congresman is not acknowledging the Palestinians deaths. How many Palestinians are dying? How many israelis have died? Good push back by Joy Reid.

    @marmac7619

    When you look back on ALL the horrendous & hideous things that have either come directly out of their Maga Mouths or drawn in some despicable cartoonish garbaage, about especially, Members of the Squad, & how frankly, have been meant to put targets on their backs, for bad things to 'hopefully' happen to 1 or more of them; for ANY repugs frankly, let alone any Democrat, to single HER out, is just despicable. But frankly, she proved her point, that Marginalized Communities don't really have any voice when they try to speak THEIR truth – to power, certainly not Palestinians or many Americans.

  16. 32
    @marmac7619

    I am disgusted frankly, at the House Dems, such as Marie G. Perez-WA & next door to my State, who voted with the magas to censure Rep. Tlaib, when i haven't heard ANY of them loudly condemning all the H & S repubs who have suggested to basically raze Gaza to the ground! Apparently those are tolerable? And boy is it hypocritical. They should have gone to her privately & asked for either an apology &/or an explanation, 1st, but it is nothing short of disloyal to your Comrades to diss on her, while keeping mum about those suggesting what you 'thought' she was!

    @emiliovargas3184

    So when is the 1st amendment ok to use ? Because its becoming a problem that if you disagree with anyone either it becomes violent or ppl get arrested where does it end im a Democrat i dont agree with maga at all but i cannot be a hypocrite and expect ppl to listen to my views for me not to respect theirs we must agree to disagree what happen in israel was wrong but they also must defend themselves but against those who wronged them not thee innocent because the same way Israel feels about there civilians being attacked the world is also feeling that way towards the (innocent) ppl in gaza these are conversations that MUST BE TALKED about because other countries are pushing false info that can affect the war if this womens does not stand up as a congress women with her platform knowing that her job is to be the voice of the ppl then she knows shes only part of the problem we need to stop trying to silence each other and instead listen to the problem come to an agreement and fix it because we dont see those ppl who stand with russia china who are anti American and are part of congress being censured

  18. 34
    @alliejohnson9520

    No sir, you and your colleagues are very unfair to reality of what is happening to the innocent people , she is absolutely right when she says all lives matter, that nation has been under attack as far as Israel has taken over their land and greed has not end.
