This was known, before the 2020 election took place. He asked if he could pardon himself, and sane people asked "if you didn't do anything wrong, why would you need a pardon" and then lawyers said "no, idiot, you cannot pardon yourself, otherwise Nixon would have done so".

The issue is that more and more western democracies begin to look like banana republics with presidents and heads of government being prosecuted as soon as they leave the office. This just paves the road to more dictatorships with heads of states fearing to leave their functions. There should be audits, checks and balances of the terms and if “independent” (as much as it’s possible) authorities don’t find anything criminal, the pardon should be automatic at the end of the political mandate. As long as there were no crimes against humanity, prosecuting exiting politicians is just a disgrace for the democracy.
